A Literary Legend Fights for a Local Library.

The afternoon began with the screening of “They Have Not Seen the Stars”, a short documentary interview with Mr. Bradbury by then 11-year-old Devin Kelly. “The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit” followed. Then, Ray Bradbury, himself, appeared on stage.

Mr. Bradbury was in great form, recounting his memories of being born, seeing “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” at the tender age of 3, learning to read and discovering Edgar Allen Poe and Edgar Rice Burroughs. He advised the audience to “do what you love and love what you do” and described how the public library enabled him to do this. For ten years, beginning at the age of 18, he spent three days a week at the library letting his inquiring mind ramble from book to book. This self-directed education, he enthused, has proved to be more valuable than the college education he could not afford. He charmed the audience with stories of his first sales to “Weird Tales”, his first kiss and his encounters with New York publishers and Hollywood producers.
